Lowcountry Lab Rescue Launches Shoe Collection Drive with WoofTrax Shoes for Shelters Campaign

Look in your closet and count how many pairs of shoes you have and haven’t worn in years. Now, think about how those shoes could benefit those less fortunate and the Lowcountry Lab Rescue at the same time.
Along with Wooftrax Shoes for Shelters Fundraiser and Funds2Orgs, Lowcountry Lab Rescue is conducting a shoe collection drive in many locations from March 14 - May 15. Lowcountry Lab Rescue will earn funds based on the number of pairs collected as Funds2Orgs will purchase all of the donated goods. Those dollars will benefit Lowcountry Lab Rescue simply with your donation of gently worn, used or new shoes at locations listed below.

All donated shoes will then be redistributed throughout the Funds2Orgs network of micro-enterprise partners in developing nations. Funds2Orgs helps impoverished people start, maintain and grow businesses in countries such as Haiti, Honduras and other nations in Central America and Africa. Proceeds from the shoe sales are used to feed, clothe and house their families.

In the US alone, approximately 600 million pairs of shoes are thrown away each year. The materials used to manufacture shoes are created from chemical compounds, the kind that will create health hazards if left to disintegrate openly or in landfills.

Gently worn, used and new shoes are used in developing nations for impoverished people to start, maintain, and grow their micro-enterprise. Collected shoes are consolidated and shipped to these micro-entrepreneurs where they are cleaned and repaired. Because of this opportunity, individuals are able to feed, clothe, and house their families.

“The bulk of our funding comes from private donations and our adoption fee covers less than half the cost of caring for an average dog in foster care - let alone some of those that require surgery. This drive is a win-win in terms of a rescue group like ours,” says Gail Golightly, Volunteer Coordinator of LLR. “We will be paid by the pound for the shoes we collect, the shoes are destined to help others and it will keep discarded shoes out of land-fills.”

Nearly 150 animal shelters and rescues participated in the WoofTrax Shoes for Shelters Fall Fundraiser.

Local businesses have agreed to be drop off locations and healthcare providers Medical University of South Carolina and Roper St. Francis Hospital are collecting shoes from their co-workers. Local neighborhoods have drop off points in Mount Pleasant, Summerville, North Charleston, Charleston, Columbia and even Myrtle Beach.

DROP OFF LOCATIONS INCLUDE:
