Tip from Ryan Nelson: If you're just starting off in the world of public relations and someone asks you to create a media list, don't put advertising executives and other sales related people on there. It looks lazy and your internship/employer/contract person will wonder if you understand the side of editorial at all.

Get to know reporters, their beats, editors, etc...you don't have to know them personally (however that does help) know WHAT they do.

You wouldn't send a recipe to a crime reporter, right? Then get with it.
